Why You Should (Or Shouldn't) Go Private on TikTok
TikTok is designed as a public broadcasting platform, but not everyone wants to be the next viral sensation. If you are using the app simply to share funny moments with close friends, family, or classmates, leaving your account public exposes your digital footprint to billions of strangers, data scrapers, and bots.
Switching your account to Private Mode is the ultimate way to take back control of your privacy. However, before you flip the switch, it is crucial to understand how it affects your content and your current audience.
Step-by-Step: How to Turn On Private Mode
Locking down your TikTok account is incredibly simple and can be reversed at any time. Here is how to do it on both iOS and Android:
- Open the TikTok app and tap the Profile icon in the bottom right corner.
- Tap the three horizontal lines (the menu) in the top right corner of your screen.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Tap on Privacy.
- At the very top, toggle the Private account switch so it turns green. Your account is now locked.
What Actually Happens When You Go Private?
This is where most users get confused. Going private changes the fundamental mechanics of how your profile operates on the platform. Here is exactly what happens the moment you turn that switch green:
Can My Videos Still Appear on the FYP?
Absolutely not. This is the biggest trade-off. Once your account is private, your videos are completely removed from the public For You Page (FYP) ecosystem. No matter which trending hashtags or sounds you use, your content will only be visible to users who already follow you.
What Happens to Existing Followers?
Going private does not kick out your current audience. Everyone who was already following you before you went private will remain a follower and will continue to see your videos on their "Following" feed. If there are people on that list you no longer want seeing your content, you will have to go into your followers list and manually remove or block them.
Can People Still Stitch or Duet My Videos?
No. TikTok prioritizes privacy for locked accounts. Even your approved followers will not be able to Duet, Stitch, or download your videos. Your content is strictly "view only" within the app.
How to Approve or Deny Follower Requests
Now that you are private, when someone searches for your username or clicks a link to your profile, they will see a lock icon and a message stating, "This account is private." To see your videos, they must tap the "Follow" button, which sends a Follow Request to your inbox.
To manage these requests:
- Go to your Inbox (the notification icon at the bottom of the screen).
- Tap on New followers (or "Follow requests" at the top).
- You will see a list of users waiting for approval. You can tap the Checkmark to let them in, or the X to silently deny them. (TikTok does not notify users when their request is denied).
By understanding these mechanics, you can enjoy all the creative editing tools TikTok has to offer without worrying about your videos falling into the wrong hands.
