Why Can't I See Sent Requests Directly in the App?
Have you ever sent a follow request to a private Instagram account, only to realize weeks later that they never accepted it? Accumulating too many unaccepted requests can clutter your account's backend and sometimes even trigger Instagram's spam filters.
In the past, Instagram allowed users to view "Sent Requests" deep within the security settings. However, recent privacy updates have removed this direct shortcut. Today, the only official, secure way to view your entire history of unanswered requests is to download your profile's raw data archive.
Step-by-Step: How to Download Your Data to Find Sent Requests
Do not use sketchy third-party apps that claim they can show you your sent requests. They will steal your password. Follow these official steps directly inside the Instagram app:
- Go to your Instagram profile and tap the three-line menu in the top right corner.
- Select Your activity.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Download your information.
- Tap Request a download. Select your Instagram profile, and choose Select types of information (this makes the download much faster than downloading everything).
- Select Followers and following, then hit Next.
- Submit the request. Instagram will email you a secure link (usually within 15 minutes to an hour) when the file is ready.
How to Read the File and Cancel Your Requests
Once you receive the email from Meta, download the ZIP file to your phone or computer. Extract (unzip) the folder.
- Open the extracted folder and navigate to the followers_and_following subfolder.
- Find the file labeled pending_follow_requests.html (or recent_follow_requests).
- Tap to open this file in your standard web browser. You will see a clean, plain-text list of every single account that has left your follow request pending.
To cancel them: Simply copy the username from the list, paste it into your Instagram search bar, go to their profile, and tap the Requested button to withdraw it. Keeping your pending request list clean is a great way to maintain a healthy, algorithmic-friendly account!
