Move Beyond Basic Texting
Most of us use WhatsApp every single day, but we only scratch the surface of what the app can actually do. If you are still only using it to send basic texts and voice notes, you are missing out on powerful privacy tools, high-quality media sharing, and organizational hacks.
Here are the best hidden features in WhatsApp for 2026 that will completely upgrade your messaging experience.
1. Chat Lock (Ultimate Privacy)
Handing your phone to a friend to show them a photo can be stressful if you have sensitive chats. Chat Lock removes specific conversations from your main inbox and hides them behind a secure folder that requires your Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode to open. Simply tap on a contact's name at the top of a chat and toggle on "Chat Lock."
2. Silence Unknown Callers Automatically
Spam calls and international scam numbers have become a massive issue on WhatsApp. You can stop your phone from ringing when an unsaved number calls you. Go to Settings > Privacy > Calls and turn on Silence Unknown Callers. The call will still show in your log, but it will not interrupt your day.
3. Screen Sharing During Video Calls
You no longer need Zoom to share a presentation or help your parents fix a phone setting. During any WhatsApp video call, look for the Share icon (a phone with an arrow) at the bottom of the screen. You can share specific apps or your entire screen in real-time.
4. Send HD Photos by Default
Tired of WhatsApp ruining the quality of your photos? You can now send them in High Definition. When selecting a photo from your gallery to send, look for the HD icon at the top of the screen before hitting send. This bypasses the aggressive compression algorithm.
5. Edit Sent Messages (The Lifesaver)
Made a typo or sent a message to the wrong person? You have a 15-minute window to fix it. Long-press the sent message and select Edit. The recipient will see an "Edited" tag, but they will not be able to see the original mistake.
6. Use WhatsApp on Multiple Phones (Companion Mode)
You are no longer restricted to one phone. You can link a secondary smartphone (iOS or Android) to your primary account. Download WhatsApp on the second phone, and instead of entering a phone number, tap the three dots and select Link as companion device. Scan the QR code with your main phone.
7. Send Video Notes
Voice notes are great, but instant video notes are better. Tap the microphone icon once (do not hold it), and it will switch to a video camera icon. Hold it down to record a circular, 60-second video message that plays automatically in the chat.
8. Create Custom Stickers Natively
You no longer need third-party apps to make stickers. On iOS, open your Photos app, tap and hold the subject of a photo to "cut it out," copy it, and paste it directly into a WhatsApp chat. The app will automatically convert it into a custom sticker you can save.
